The hook is one of the most common techniques in armwrestling, relying primarily on speed and strength to overpower the opponent, as compared to the top roll, which attempts to gain leverage and hand control.
How to Hook
At go, turn your wrist inward (supinate) so that the flat part of your hand that leads to the pinky finger is pressing firmly down on the wrist of your opponent. Move your shoulder and upper arm over the forearm, creating as little gap as possible between the two (without touching your opponents hand to your shoulder, which will result in a foul being called). Keeping the arm tight to the body, drag with your lats to open up the opponents arm, creating distance between their hand and shoulder. A dominant position in the hook can lead to a number of transitions including a Press or a Counter Toproll.
